What is 2D medical animation?
2D animation is a flat animation created in 1908 by Emile Cohl for entertainment. 2D animation was initially created using hand-drawn frames, but over the years, due to technological advancements, 2D animation is now created using different computer programs by animating the fundamental frames in two-dimensional space.
Although, 2D animation was first created to use it predominantly in the entertainment industry, now 2D animation is widely used in various different fields namely Education, Retail, Marketing, Medical, Advertisements and others.
Amongst all such fields, this article will focus exclusively on the role and benefits of 2D animation in the healthcare industry.
In a digital environment 2D animation refers to the art of using motion to create movement to static illustrations. It is a traditional form of animation. This victor-based animation consists of only X, the horizontal dimension and Y, the vertical dimension axis. Compared to 3D animation which consists of X, Y and Z axes with X referring to height, Y referring to width and Z referring to depth; 2D animation does not consist of Z axes – depth. Hence, in other words 2D animation shows the process in a flat and less realistic way.
Additionally, compared to other forms of animations like 3D; 2D animation is an effective form of communication, especially for healthcare companies and clients that have smaller budget and a pressing deadline. For instance, medical awareness month campaign. This is because 2D animation comparatively requires less time to create and thus quicker to produce. Whereas, on the other hand 3D animation requires more time and resources.
Role of 2D animation in healthcare industry
In the healthcare industry, with every advancement and breakthrough research performed; scientists, researchers, doctors and other healthcare professionals are always on the lookout for an efficient and an effective medium to communicate powerful and complex biomedical concepts.
This is often because individuals with nonmedical background often find it difficult to understand the pedogeological concepts of science and medicine. Therefore, healthcare companies and professionals use instructed animated videos like 2D medical animation videos to help their target audience understand better.
On doing so, these instructed animated videos have transformed the way healthcare companies, professionals, employees and patients communicate and share information.
2D medical animation videos are widely used in the healthcare industry to familiarize, educate and train different individuals on various different technical aspects of science and medicine. Most often healthcare companies and professionals choose 2D medical animation videos because of its ability to break down powerful and complex dry pedogeological concepts of science and medicine into an easy, short, playful visuals.
To better understand and summarize in detail the role of 2D animation videos in healthcare. The major key points are:
2D animation videos through its playful and engaging visuals can help explain to patients, employees, investors and others the functionality of medications at the molecular levels.
2D animation also plays a vital role in explaining diseases and educating patients, employees, doctors and surgeons on how to manage and prevent certain diseases.
Healthcare companies and professionals use 2D animation as an educational tool to explain and train new employees, surgeons and doctors on how to use a new medical device or explain the mechanism of action of a drug.
Healthcare professionals also use 2D animation to guide and inform patients on wellness and better lifestyle choices.
Healthcare professionals from various different health fields such as Dentistry, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and others also use 2D animation videos for forensic reconstruction or interactive learning.
From a commercial perspective, healthcare companies and professionals use 2D animation to educate and pitch their medical grade products to their investors and sales representatives for quick and better understanding.
Benefits of 2D animation
There are several different advantages of using 2D medical animation –
1. Cost-effective
Compared to 3D medical animation, a more visually immersive detailed form of animation, 2D medical animation is a cost-effective form of animation. This is largely due to the fact that 2D animation involves low cost of production. Compared to 3D animation videos, 2D animation videos require less time and money to produce. Thereby being an ideal choice for healthcare companies and clients with limited resources and pressing deadline.
2. Easy to understand and increased engagement
By using 2D medical animation, healthcare companies and professionals help their patients to better understand a particular complex medical procedure. This is largely because of 2D medical animation’s ability to break down powerful and complex dry pedogeological concepts of science and medicine into an easy, short, playful visuals.
Several studies have shown and proven that using visuals to illustrate and explain a complex message of science and medicine results in enhanced perception of the intended message than a long non-visual message. Unlike traditional formats of visual communication such as photos and infographics, 2D animation allows to show movements that patients can pause, stop, and speed up as per their convenience. Resulting in quick assimilation and understanding of complex medical topics.
Most often patients might not be interested to read long dry technical concepts to familiarize themselves about a procedure that they are not aware of; or educate themselves about the functionality of a medical drug. Thereby, healthcare professionals opt for more visually pleasing format such as a 2D medical animation video to explain a certain procedure to their patients. By doing so, due to the vibrant, fun and playful visuals, patients and other individuals find it easier to retain and recall information. Consequently, resulting in increased engagement. Thus, by using 2D medical animation, healthcare professionals ensure that their target audience have a quick and easy comprehension of their products and services with the ability to retain, remember and learn quickly in a visually pleasing manner.
3. Training & Education
2D medical animation plays a vital role in training and educating new surgeons and doctors. Healthcare companies and Medical Institutions often use 2D medical animation videos to explain wide range of topics to their surgeons and students respectively. Most often the complex technical medical terms are things that cannot be seen with the naked eyes. So, Healthcare companies and Medical Institutions use 2D medical animation, for instance, 2D animation to illustrate the mechanism of action of a certain drug at it’s molecular level on the human skin.
Additionally, Healthcare companies and professionals also use 2D animation videos to explain the biomedical and scientific terms to their investors for quick comprehension. As investors are mother individuals from non-medical background.
